1. ASSUMPTION OF RISK I acknowledge that participation in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, grappling, and martial arts training involves intense, stressful, and strenuous physical contact. I understand these activities carry a high degree of inherent risk and can result in serious physical or emotional injury, including but not limited to sprains, fractures, concussions, soft tissue damage, paralysis, heart attacks, or death. I confirm that I am fully aware of these risks and I am voluntarily choosing to participate with full knowledge of the dangers involved.

2. RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND INDEMNIFICATION I hereby forever release, waive, discharge, and agree to indemnify and hold harmless Knights Jiu-Jitsu, LLC, its owner (Robert L. I assume all financial responsibility for any emergency medical transportation and treatment.

4. COMMUNICABLE DISEASE AND HYGIENE I acknowledge the inherent risk of exposure to communicable diseases, skin infections (including but not limited to staph, ringworm, and herpes gladiatorum), and viruses in a close-contact environment. I agree to strictly adhere to the School’s hygiene policies, including wearing clean training gear, maintaining trimmed nails, and abstaining from training if I am sick, exhibiting symptoms of illness, or have an active skin infection.

5. PHOTO AND MEDIA RELEASE I hereby grant Knights Jiu-Jitsu, LLC the absolute right and permission to take photographs and/or video of me (or my minor child) during training and events. Section 1 - Program Overview

Knights Jiu-Jitsu is a year-round Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy focused on continuous development.
There are no seasonal breaks or resets. Progress is built through consistency, repetition, and structured instruction over time.
The goal is technical ability combined with discipline and personal growth.

ORIGINS OF BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu traces its origins to traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, developed and refined by Mitsuyo Maeda, a Kodokan Judo expert who traveled internationally demonstrating and teaching grappling-based combat.
Maeda brought his teachings to Brazil in the early 1900s, where he began instructing the Gracie family. From this foundation, Carlos Gracie Sr. and later Carlos Gracie Jr. adapted and evolved the system, placing greater emphasis on leverage, positional control, and live resistance training.
This evolution gave rise to what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—a system centered around the ability to control and submit an opponent through technique rather than size or strength.
Over generations, the art has continued to evolve through global competition, leading to the modern IBJJF-based structure practiced today.

ACADEMY IDENTITY & FOUNDATION
Knights Jiu-Jitsu was built from a combination of traditional Jiu-Jitsu principles, modern training methodology, and real-world application.
The system is influenced by both sport Jiu-Jitsu and practical self-defense concepts, with an emphasis on structured progression, safety, and long-term development.
The academy follows an approach that prioritizes fundamentals first, ensuring students build a strong base before advancing into more complex techniques and live application.
Training is designed to develop:
·      Technical efficiency under pressure
·      Positional control and awareness
·      Safe and structured live training ability
·      Long-term progression without shortcuts

LINEAGE & TECHNICAL INFLUENCE
Knights Jiu-Jitsu follows the following Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lineage:
You — Rob Fitzgerald → Logan Haselman → Dante Leon → Vitor Oliveira → Adilson Lima → Carlos Gracie Jr. → Carlos Gracie Sr. → Mitsuyo Maeda
This lineage connects Knights Jiu-Jitsu directly to the foundational roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and its modern competitive evolution.
It reflects a system influenced by both traditional Gracie methodology and modern high-level competition development, emphasizing pressure, control, and technical refinement under resistance.
The training approach is built around:
·      Positional hierarchy and control
·      Pressure-based passing systems
·      Guard development and retention
·      High-repetition live resistance training
·      Structured, safety-first progression
This ensures students are learning a system that is both historically grounded and continuously refined through modern application.

TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
Progress is measured through consistency, not shortcuts.
Students develop through repetition, structured drilling, and controlled live application over time.
The academy is designed to support all levels—from complete beginners to advanced practitioners—within the same structured system.

FINAL NOTES
Knights Jiu-Jitsu is designed to be a long-term training environment where students can grow physically, mentally, and technically at a sustainable pace.
Every class is part of a larger progression system aimed at building skill, discipline, and confidence.

SECTION 2 — PHILOSOPHY & SAFETY

Knights Jiu-Jitsu is built on the principle that training extends beyond physical technique. The goal is to develop disciplined, capable individuals who carry what they learn on the mats into everyday life.
Students are expected to conduct themselves with respect, discipline, and control at all times. This applies not only during training, but also outside of the academy. Behavior, attitude, and personal accountability are considered part of each student’s development.
Respect is shown through how students interact with instructors, training partners, and the training environment. This includes listening during instruction, training with control, and maintaining a positive and professional attitude on the mats.
Safety is the highest priority in all training environments. Techniques are taught progressively and applied under supervision to ensure students can train effectively without unnecessary risk.
Students are expected to train with control and awareness of their partners. Submissions must be applied responsibly, and all students are expected to tap early and clearly when necessary. There is no place for ego in training, and safety always takes precedence over intensity.
Training is structured to allow students of all experience levels to develop at an appropriate pace. Coaches may adjust drills, intensity, or live training based on safety, class size, and student experience.
Knights Jiu-Jitsu promotes a culture of accountability, discipline, and continuous improvement. Students are expected to show effort, consistency, and a willingness to learn. Progress is earned through time, repetition, and commitment.

Section 3 - Equipment, Requirements & Academy Standards

Students are encouraged to arrive prepared for training in accordance with academy standards.
Training at Knights Jiu-Jitsu includes both Gi and No-Gi instruction for all age groups.
Gi training emphasizes structure, grips, control, and traditional Jiu-Jitsu mechanics. No-Gi training emphasizes movement, wrestling integration, timing, and adaptability.
A properly fitted Gi is required for Gi classes. No-Gi classes require appropriate athletic attire such as rash guards and grappling shorts.
The academy recommends mouthguards for safety during drilling and live training. Headgear is optional and may be used based on individual preference.
Gis and belts are available for purchase through the academy but are not required. Gis purchased through the academy will include an initial belt. All subsequent belt promotions are provided directly by Knights Jiu-Jitsu.
Merchandise may be available from time to time. It is optional and not required for participation in training.
For safety reasons, jewelry is not permitted on the mats. This includes rings, necklaces, earrings, watches, and any items that could pose a risk to the student or training partners.
Students are expected to maintain basic hygiene standards including clean uniforms and trimmed nails to ensure a safe training environment for all participants.

SECTION 4 — CLASS SCHEDULE, WEEKLY STRUCTURE & TRAINING SYSTEM

Knights Jiu-Jitsu operates on a consistent weekly schedule designed to support structured learning, safe training progression, and long-term development.
Training is held on three days per week:
• Monday
• Tuesday
• Thursday
This schedule is designed to provide consistency while allowing adequate recovery time between sessions, ensuring students can train safely and effectively over time.

GI & NO-GI STRUCTURE
All students participate in both Gi and No-Gi training regardless of age or program level.
Gi training focuses on structure, grips, positional control, pressure, and traditional Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals.
No-Gi training focuses on movement, timing, wrestling integration, clinch work, and real-world application.
Both formats are essential to complete development and are integrated throughout the weekly training cycle.

DAILY CLASS TIMES
Classes are divided by age group to ensure appropriate pacing, safety, and learning environment.
Little Knights (Ages 5–9)
4:30 PM – 5:10 PM
A structured introduction to Jiu-Jitsu focused on movement, coordination, discipline, and foundational technique.
This program operates on a structured rotating curriculum (referred to as a 10-week cycle in name only). It is not a seasonal or closed program. It runs continuously year-round, with material revisited and reinforced regularly to build retention and confidence over time.

Squires (Ages 9–16)
5:15 PM – 6:00 PM
A progressive development class focused on technical understanding, controlled resistance, and introduction to live application.
Students at this level begin refining fundamentals while developing timing, awareness, and composure under pressure.

Adult Knights (Ages 16+)
6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
A structured adult training session focused on technical refinement, drilling, positional sparring, and live application.
Training intensity is scaled based on experience, safety, and class composition.

CLASS STRUCTURE (ALL PROGRAMS)
Each class follows a consistent structure designed to create discipline, repetition, and measurable progression:
Training begins with a structured warm-up focused on movement, mobility, and injury prevention.
This is followed by instructor-led technical instruction where concepts are broken down in detail.
Students then transition into partner drilling to build repetition, timing, and understanding.
Depending on age and skill level, classes may include controlled live training or positional sparring under supervision.
Each class concludes with controlled mat cleanup and structured dismissal to reinforce respect and discipline.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to arrive on time and prepared for training.
While punctuality is important for structure and safety, it is also understood that students are real people with real lives. Late arrivals are permitted when appropriate and will be integrated safely into class when possible without disruption.
Attendance consistency is encouraged for progression, but the academy recognizes that work, family, illness, and life obligations may occasionally affect participation.
Coaches may adjust training intensity, structure, or live rounds based on safety, class size, and student experience level to ensure a controlled training environment.

SECTION 5 — TRAINING DEVELOPMENT & BELT SYSTEM

Knights Jiu-Jitsu follows a structured progression system aligned with the standards of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF).
Progression in Jiu-Jitsu is earned over time through consistent training, technical development, and the ability to apply techniques under resistance.
There is no fixed timeline for promotion. Advancement is based on individual progress, not attendance alone.

PROMOTION CRITERIA
Students are evaluated based on multiple factors, including:
• Consistency in attendance and effort
• Technical understanding of positions and movements
• Ability to apply techniques during drilling and controlled live training
• Awareness, control, and decision-making under pressure
• Overall development and improvement over time
Promotions reflect a student’s ability to perform at the level of their rank, not simply time spent in the program.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Youth students progress through an age-appropriate system focused on building:
• Coordination and movement
• Positional understanding
• Basic control and escapes
• Confidence and discipline
For younger students, progression emphasizes development and retention rather than performance alone.
Students in the Little Knights and Squires programs are introduced to Jiu-Jitsu in a structured and supportive environment that prioritizes safety and learning.

ADULT DEVELOPMENT
Adult students progress through a more technical and performance-based system.
This includes:
• Technical refinement and deeper understanding of positions
• Controlled live application (rolling and positional sparring)
• Consistent ability to apply techniques against resistance
• Strategic thinking and adaptation
Advancement requires demonstrated ability, not just participation.
CHARACTER & EXPECTATIONS
Technical ability alone does not determine advancement.
Students are expected to demonstrate:
• Respect for instructors and training partners
• Discipline and control during training
• Consistency in effort and attitude
• Accountability both on and off the mats
Character is considered a required component of progression at Knights Jiu-Jitsu.

Recommended use: Have every participant sign this document before stepping onto the mats or participating in any physical activity during the pre-insurance period. For minors, require the parent or legal guardian to sign before participation. Keep the signed waiver securely with the participant's enrollment records and retain an incident report for any injury or significant event.

Because this waiver is intended to cover an unusually high-risk period before commercial insurance becomes effective, I strongly recommend an Ohio attorney review the final document before relying on it.
